OVERVIEW
History:
The department of Economics of Guwahati College was started with the establishment of the college in 1964 and had got the permanent affiliation of the Gauhati University with effect from 31.07.1989. The Department was initially headed by late Dr. Bandhuram Deka- one of the pioneers of the Guwahati College followed by Prof. Debesh Chandra Choudhury, Prof. Renu Dutta, Dr.Khanindra Chandra Sarma and Prof Sanjit K Chakravorty .The department was also served by renowned personalities like Arobindo Kalita, Dr. Runumi Barua, Mrs. Rehna Iskandar Ali, Mrs. Manisha Sarma etc.

Library:
The library of the department has more 500 books which consist of both text books and reference books. Books are issued to the students regularly as per the requirement.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT
The prime objective of all the teachers of the department is to impart quality education to the students and to put emphasis on improvement of academic achievements of the students along with their university results. The faculty members also target to develop research habits among the students and also to nurture cocurricular excellence. Another objective of the department is to develop intellectual, creative and leadership qualities among students. Department of Economics also aims to develop entrepreneurial mindset among students. To accomplish the objectives, continuous efforts are undertaken by the faculty members and various relevant activities/programs are organised.
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
Besides the regular academic activities, Department of Economics are devoted to organize a diverse range of additional programs to promote academic and cocurricular excellence of the students. Socio Economic Survey / educational tour/industrial visits for students are organized every year by the department. The department organises students’ seminar presentation, practice teaching sessions, special session / remedial classes for slow and advanced learners, farewell program for outgoing students, freshmen social for new entrants in the department, teachers’ day celebration, parent teacher meets and many other events to increase students’ engagement, participation and academic and co-curricular excellence. In addition to these, the department also organises various talks, workshops, career counselling programs, faculty development programs etc. Department of Economics publishes its Wall Magazine ‘Economica’ every year.
To develop entrepreneurial habits among students, Department of Economics started to organise Exhibition of handmade items prepared by students in the year 2019. In 2022, ‘ECOTREATO’ was formed which is a direct platform for sale of handicraft items and services. A two-day Winter carnival was organised with participation of a large number of students in the presence of renown entrepreneurs, officials from NSIC and other dignitaries and guests. Department of Economics along with Institutional Innovation Cell has initiated the process of converting ‘ECOTREATO’ to a full-fledged Incubation Centre by collaborating with NSIC, MSME and Assam Start Up the Nest.

STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS:
Students of Department of Economics excel in final university examinations. Students are actively engaged in academic and cocurricular activities within and outside of the college. Students of the department have won prizes in various inter-departmental competitions organised in the college like wall magazine competition, debate competition, prizes in cultural procession of college week, chorus competition, stall competition etc. Students’ progression to higher education is also quite satisfactory, after graduation many students get admitted in PG, MBA and some other professional courses in different universities/institutions across the country. Alumni of the department is employed in various government and non-government organisations. Students are also excellent in co-curricular activities, recently one of the students from Economics Department won silver medal in 6th International Karate Championship held at Kolkata.
