OVERVIEW
The Political Science Department of Guwahati College was established in the year 1964 along with the establishment of the college itself. However, it got provisional affiliation in 20-03-1969 and permanent affiliation in 08-07-1989. The major course (at present named as honours) was introduced in 1979 to cater to the growing need for specialization. Since its inception, the department is relentlessly working for the academic and cognitive development of its students.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

- the department also has a mission to uplift itself to the level of a composite institution with facilities for research, diploma and other short term courses within the discipline
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
The department has organised a variety of events from academics to co-curricular and extra-curricular activities over the years for the all round development of its students.
ACTIVITIES
A popular talk on the topic Women’s Rights as Human Rights was organised on 06-12-2022.
The department celebrated the International Human Rights Day on 10-12-2021. Students made posters reflecting different aspects of human rights violation to mark the occasion.
National Constitution day was celebrated by the department on 26-11-2022
Students of the department participated in the college week cultural rally related performance on 03-06- 2022
National Voters’ Day was celebrated on 25-01-2023

Workshop on Goods and Services Tax held on 20-03-2019
Achievements:
The students of the department have achieved laurels in different fields over the last few years. Few are mentioned hereunder:
- Dr. Rakhee Naiding, is working as an Assistant Professor in the department of Political Science Bikali College, Dhupdhara, Assam
- Ms Juli Sharma represented her NCC Directorate at the Annual NCC Republic Day Camp and the Prime Minister’s Rally held at New Delhi from 01 January to 29 January 2019
- Ms Sehnaz Sikha Rahman participated in the folk dance category and won 1st position award in 17th International Competition of Indian Art and Culture on 6th April 2019 which was held at Srinakharinwirot University, Sukumbit, Bangkok, Thailand. She is also the recipient of many other awards/sammans by various dance institutions of Assam
- Mr. Kritartha Dutta participated in the 32nd All India Full Contact Karate Tournament 2022 held in Durgapur, West Bengal and placed in the 2nd Position.
- Mr. Dhiman Barman participated in the 6th International Karate Championship, 2022 held in Netaji Indoor Stadium, Kolkata (WB) on 30th and 31st July, 2022 and got a bronze medal in the category Male Senior Kumite-50 kg.
